Women in prison, without access to commercial cosmetics, turn to the items they can get, including skittles, ink, coffee grounds, and glitter from cards.
I set up a Fake Up Salon at the gallery with prison jump suits, a professional beautician, and a polaroid photographer, and invited people to put on the jump suits and try on Fake Up. Before and after polaroid pictures were taken and posted on the wall in a large grid.
The project was a huge success, with people waiting to put on fake-up all night.
This happening first occurred Friday, August 13th, 2010 at WorkSound.
This happening was also featured in the Tacoma Art Museum’s 10’th Northwest Biennial.
